A couple of months later the shelter’s vet behaviorist asked me to foster a Jack Russell mix, an extremely fearful guy from an animal hoarding case. This terrier was so upset when he arrived at the shelter that he was all bared teeth. A staffer whom I considered fearless confided in me that Walter had scared her worse than any dog she had ever handled. This did not deter me. In fact, he seemed like the perfect foster dog for us. I had never wanted a Jack Russell, with all their energy. I was not a “small dog” person, whatever that meant. I preferred female dogs. This dog, unlike Brody, would be so easy to give back. Sure, I told the vet behaviorist, we’ll foster Walter.
